Friday April 3rd, at 7pm, Pine Street Band is grateful to offer the 11th expression of this meaningful tradition of a hybrid concert/worship service, where the musicians of Pine Street Church (PSC), The Pine Street Band, perform an entire album chosen from the “secular” ranks. The experience is framed with narration of PSC pastor, Andrew Daugherty, woven throughout the performance that considers the music and lyrics through a lens of the story of the season, the Passiontide.
The Pine Street Band, an ensemble of all professional musicians and multi-instrumentalists, shares its musical talents each Sunday morning at Pine Street Church. For this performance the band will be joined for a second consecutive year by Christina Smith and her considerable talents on percussion. This year's official concert lineup is:
David L’Hommedieu, vocals, guitar
Kristin Gornstein, vocals
Phil Norman, bass guitar
Justin Hoffenberg, guitar
Carmen Sandim, piano, marimba
Christina Smith, drums, percussion
This year’s album selection is Bruce Cockburn’s Dancing in the Dragon’s Jaws (DITDJ). In a 2003 re-mastering/re-issue of his 1979 album, Cross Rhythms writer, Tony Cummings, had the following to write about DITDJ.
...the third of a trio of, what the sleevenote calls, "acoustic jazz-folk albums", 'Dancing In The Dragon's Jaws' is like an old wine which the years have enriched so, if anything, its subtle charms are increased. It also features some of his finest guitar work ever… The album boasts a bright, celebratory tone. Bruce once said the album was about "being joyful in the face of everything." Not that this is a shallow piece of Christian triumphalism. Bruce went on to say, "I wanted to give a concrete expression of the suffering that's all too evident in the world."... “Dancing in the Dragon’s Jaws” is a beautiful expression of the joy and tension of being human and relating to both one another and to the God of the universe while dancing merrily within the dragon’s jaws…
